We can STOP the crisis now!
For a generation, legislators have kicked the can of post-secondary support down the road to the point where it has become a major budgetary liability. Current political solutions based on various loan forgiveness programs are largely promoted by the Democratic party and fall short on several issues. This is aside from their unlikely passage in today’s political climate. The STOP legislation is the first step in reversing this long-term financial disaster.
How It Works
The STOP Act makes all student loan payments, including interest and penalties, a tax CREDIT. A student loan holder’s annual federal tax liability is reduced, dollar for dollar, by the amount of student loan payments. The balance can be carried forward up to 10 years.
Numbers count and we have numbers!
Can the STOP Act succeed? There are 44 million student loan holders and almost 9 million senior student loan holders. One in four adults between the ages of 18 to 40 years of age have a student loan. If they identify as single-issue voters that will elect only Members of Congress who support the STOP Act, then the STOP Act can be assured of passage. This is not a matter of hiring expensive lobbyists or supporting the campaigns of Members of Congress, CETR will do neither. But it will inform its supporters of who to vote for in this grassroots movement based on support for the STOP Act.
Only 357 people stand in your way!
There are only 535 persons standing in the way of changing the course of this crisis; 100 US Senators and 435 US Representatives. Only 2/3rds of these members, 67 Senators and 290 Representatives, are needed to assure the override of any Presidential veto. This campaign will require each member of Congress or their election opponent to commit to the passage of the STOP Act. Failure to support the STOP Act is considered opposition by the incumbent or challenger.
Email your Congressman and Senators and let them know you want the STOP Act to be passed. Ask them to sign the Pledge to the New Middle Class. For candidates to Congress - opponents of incumbents and those candidates running for open seats, ask them to sign the Pledge to the Middle Class.
